Looking for something to do during the next week? There are a ton of killer shows coming up. Check out our list, then check out a few shows.
Soul, funk band Faycez U Know are performing two free shows this weekend. The first show is a part of the 2012 Smithsonian Folk Life Festival from 1 p.m.-2 p.m. on the Capitol Hill Mall. The second performance is July 1, 6 p.m. at the Kennedy Center Millinneum Stage. The band has the drive of D.C. Go-Go swing and the showmanship of rock and roll. Bring lots of water for the show on the National Mall. It’s going to be a hot weekend, but worth the music. Tickets to both show are free.
June 30 – Great American Festival
The Great American Festival is celebrating America’s birthday with live music at the National Harbor Waterfront. The festival will feature live music from Eve 6, Ozomatli, The Dance Party, Lost in Paris and See-i! Multiple DJs will be on hand for a night of dancing. Famous Daves BBQ and the Hard Times Café are among the festival vendors. The Festival begins at 3 p.m. and ends at 10 p.m. Tickets are $39.99 and VIP tickets are $69.99.
July 1 – Sacred Root Festival: Born Indie Benefit Concert
The Sacred Root Festival: Born Indie Benefit Concert will feature Maimouna Youssef, Yahzarah, Akua Allrich, Roz White and Komplex, Duke Ellington School of Arts Theatre. Youssef is a Grammy-nominated collaborator of The Roots while Yahzarah first received fame as a back-up singer for Erykah Badu and has worked with bands such as The Foreign Exchange. The two also are Duke Ellington alums. The Sacred Roots Indie Fest celebrates independent artists from all disciplines over three days. Proceeds from the concert go toward benefiting independent artists in the D.C. area. Food and vending will be on the lawn all day, but the concert starts at 5 p.m. Tickets are $20.
The Scissor Sisters are bringing their dance party to the District to celebrate the July 4 holiday in style at the 9:30 Club. The band has earned a reputation for their humorous, controversial, and outright insane live performances. This show was added after the first, a day earlier on July 3, sold out. Be sure to get your tickets before this one sells out, too. Doors are at 7:00pm. Tickets are $40.
Nada Surf – July 5
Remember that song “Popular”? C’mon, you know you do! Well, the guys who brought you that song, Nada Surf, will be in the area on July 5 at Rams Head Live, where they’ll be sure to play “Popular” and a number of other awesome tracks off of their six full length albums. Doors are at 7:00pm. Tickets are $20.
The Philadelphia-based jam band, Disco Biscuits are out in support of their 6th release, Otherwise Law Abiding Citizens, which will be out on July 12. With only select appearances scheduled as of now for the band, these shows are being hotly anticipated. Make sure to check out this band when they are in town, playing at the 9:30 Club. Doors are at 8:00pm. Tickets are $35.
