The last time DC Music Live sat down with the gents from Patent Pending they were on tour at Jammin’ Java with Bowling for Soup (RELATED STORIES: Patent Pending Stops at Jammin’ Java, Talks Touring) and were getting ready to head to Las Vegas for the Billboard Battle of the Bands. Well, in the three months since we talked to them, it would be an understatement to say that things have gone well.
“It’s absolutely the craziest thing that has ever happened in the history of time,” said frontman Joe Ragosta. That “craziest thing” that Ragosta is referring to is the band’s performance live on the Billboard Awards, their prize for winning Billboard’s Battle of the Bands. “We met Whoopi Goldberg. My fiancée almost knocked Katy Perry over right before she went onstage. It was just a wild, wild thing, man.”
But, said Ragosta, the best part about the entire experience was seeing how the band handled it. “The thing that I’m happiest about is that our band has stayed the same. There hasn’t been any big heads.” Well, maybe not quite everything has stayed the same. “I have nicer clothes because my mom made me buy nice clothes because she didn’t want me to be on TV looking like a jerk.”
Patent Pending rode their wave of success to the Merriweather Post Pavillion (RELATED STORIES: Vans Warped Tour Makes A Stop At Merriweather) to play the Ourstage.com stage, something Ragosta said the band had been eagerly anticipating. “Every year this is the best place to be. The years where we don’t do a full week I feel lost. It just feels so good to be back.”
But the Billboard Awards and Warped Tour aren’t the only things the band have going on. They just recently released a new music video for their song, “I Already Know (She Don’t Give A Sh*t About Me)“, an awesome combination of live action and animation that takes on all of the famous iPhone applications, such as Fruit Ninja and Temple Run.
And, to top it off, Ragosta is getting married soon. “Yea man, we are going to have a wedding-ass wedding.” [Editors note: We’re not really sure what a wedding-ass wedding means!] “All of our fans wanted to attend once they found out about it, but unfortunately we weren’t able to make that happen.”
The band will be heading overseas with Bowling for Soup as well. “We are going to England to do this huge, huge tour and we’ve
never been overseas before,” said Ragosta. “Apparently people know us, because we had a song do well over there, which is pretty much amazing!”
And, finally, after the wedding and the tours are over, they’ll head back in to the studio to record the follow up to their most recent release, the extremely catchy Second Family.
All in all, it’s been a pretty good ride few months, to say the least, and the guys in Patent Pending are determined to enjoy the ride while it lasts. Which hopefully won’t be any time soon.
