For a band from Aberdeen, MD, best known as the birthplace of Cal Ripken, it can be a tough road to achieve success. But for punk rock/reggae group Ballyhoo! that road never deterred them from achieving their goals.

Building a fan base is no easy task. And that’s just at home. Trying to do the same thing on the road is especially complicated, especially when that road is on another continent. For London-based rockers, Little Barrie, much of their success in the last 12 years has subsisted in the UK. Now on their third stateside tour this year, the affable rock trio are making splashes with their latest release, King of the Wavesand maybe a little hard work.

Metal was on display Tuesday night in the Nation’s Capital when System of a Down and Deftones took the stage at the Verizon Center. Those who are scared of a few mosh pits and allergic to head banging were probably best staying away on this night.

One of the things that I love the most about this city is that, on any given night, there are literally hundreds of places you can go to check out good live, local music. This past Saturday I wandered in to the Axum Lounge, just off of U Street, and came across two talented local groups.

Nearly 30,000 music lovers from around the country gathered in Dover, Del., just two hours north of D.C., for the inaugural weekend of Firefly Music Festival. Excitement was particularly high for the festival’s first headliner — Grammy-winning rock icon and former White Stripes frontman Jack White.

Yet despite all of this, when he brought his latest solo project Matt Skiba and the Sekrets to D.C., one couldn’t help but notice the seemingly nervous and uncomfortable aura about him.
